MONDAY NIGHT VOLLEYBALL CLUB RULES (2006)

(Formerly "NSC Volleyball Club Playing Rules 2000")

1. FORMATION OF A TEAM AND SUBSTITUTION

1.1  Every  player  on a team's roster must meet the current eligibility and team requirements of the Club (see section 4).

1.2  A new player can be added to a team's roster at any time.

1.3  A new  player may be added to the Club-wide substitution list at any time, provided that this player has not been on another team's roster during a session  (see section 5 for "session" definition).

1.4  Rostered players from any team may substitute for any other team for a regular season match (not for a  tournament match).   A rostered player is allowed to substitute for any other team at most two times per session.

1.5  A team may utilize one  substitute on the court per rostered player on the court.  For example, if two rostered players are on the court, then a team of four may play, with the two regulars and two substitutes; likewise, if three rostered players are on the court, three substitutes may  be utilized. Exceptions to this  rule are allowed if the opposing captain agrees.

1.6  Rostered players desiring to change teams must do so before playing three matches with that team in a session.  A person may appear on only one roster in the entire Monday Night Volleyball Club.

1.7  A  player may  play for only one team in a final tournament; in no cases are players allowed to  substitute such that they play for more than one team in a tournament.

2.  USVBA RULES APPLY EXCEPT:

2.1  A legal team "on the court" consists of four to six players.  One member of each gender must be on the court at all times. Legal combinations of men and women are:

TOTAL MEN/WOMEN WOMEN/MEN
6 2 4
6 3 3
5 2 3
5* 1 4
4 1 3
4 2 2

* Although this combination is legal, it is requested that every team have at least 2 men and 2 women on its roster.  In other words, this combination should only be used when really necessary to get a team on the court (not every week).

In all cases involving a question of whether a team is legal or a player is eligible, the match should be played and the question of legality will be resolved later.  The referee should make a notation of the  circumstances on the scoresheet.

2.2  In addition to the USVBA substitution rule, rotation is allowed as follows:

2.2.1  An initial "circular" rotation order must be established which puts a maximum sized legal team on the court.

2.2.2  Rotation takes place out of the right front position and into the right back position, or optionally out of the left back position and into the left front position.

2.2.3  At times, a player must rotate to the next position without going out in order to keep this maximum sized legal team on the court. This changes the overall rotation order but does not change the order of those players of each gender.

2.3  USVBA rules state: "If the ball is served before the first referee's whistle, the serve shall be cancelled and a re-serve directed.  The first referee will not allow a player to delay the game in this manner more than one time."

2.4  The referee is responsible for the orderly and legal flow of play.   The referee shall attempt to  maintain regulation net height and court size but may redefine other physical aspects of the game.

2.5  A  serve cannot be blocked or spiked.   It may be received open-handed as long as it is not carried or mis-hit.

2.6  It shall be considered a legal service if the ball is hit directly from the other hand of the server,  not necessarily dropped or tossed.   (Overhand and underhand serves are legal.)

2.7  All players are encouraged  to call their own fouls (this includes touching the net, ball touching the line or outside of the line,  and otherwise display good sportsmanship).    Captains should encourage  their team members to call their own  fouls.   Referees will strictly enforce volleyball rules in all   games,  especially "scooping", "holding", "carrying", "touching the net", "over the  net",  and "foot faults".  Captains are responsible for acquainting team members with the rules.   Each captain is encouraged to obtain a copy of the USVBA rules.  Each team should understand all rules and ask  officials for any interpretation.

3.  MATCH LOGISTICS

3.1  Court times and locations will be specified by the Club.  A match will last for a maximum of 50  minutes and will begin after a ten minute warm-up period.

3.2  When a legal team is not present at match time, that team will lose one point per minute until a legal team is on the court.   (See section 2.1 for definition of a legal team.)

3.3  A match consists of up to three games.   Scoring for the games is as follows:

All games are played (rally scoring) to 25 points (win by two).  The first two games are capped at 27 points or time.  Game three is is not capped,  so it is played until one team wins by two, or match time expires.
3.3.1  Additional rally points are played in two situations:
  1. any game is tied when match time is called: one rally point is played to determine the game winner

  2.
  3. before game three, match time is called, AND each team has won one game, AND the same total number of points has been scored by each team: one rally point is played to determine the match winner
Notes:

3.3.2  If three games have been  completed,  the teams may stay on the court until the match time has expired.

3.4  A team making no reasonable attempt to notify the opposing team captain that they do not plan to  play will forfeit, and may be disbanded by the club.

4.  ELIGIBILITY

4.1  All persons age 18 or older are eligible.

4.2  Eligible persons must have insurance coverage.  GLC and the Club cannot be held liable for injury incurred during play.

5.  SEASON STANDINGS AND TEAM ROTATION

5.1  A single season may be subdivided into two or more sessions.  A session encompasses one series of  round-robin matches in a division, after which divisions are realigned.

5.2  At the beginning of a  season/session a team which finished in first place in a division will move up to the next higher division, if any.

5.3  At the beginning of a season/session a team which finished in last place will move down to the next lower division, if any.

5.4  If a team does not wish to be moved to a higher division,  it will not have to if another team in its division agrees to move up.

5.5  Division standings are based on total games won during a season/session.

If a  tie occurs,  then the following tie breakers will be used:

  1. Head to head matches won against teams tied.
  2. Total games won against teams tied.
  3. Point differential in all matches.
  4. Team seeding.
